Nigerian Medical Student Dies After Russian Bombing
A journey that was meant to end with a medical degree instead ended in mourning after 23-year-old Nnani Adaobi Marian lost her life following injuries she sustained during a Russian aerial attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

Adaobi had travelled to the city to participate in her graduation ceremony at Kharkiv National Medical University when a guided bomb struck the area on June 29.
She suffered severe injuries and was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for specialist care. Despite the efforts of doctors in both countries, she died on July 5.
The news was made public by Victoria Bohuslavska, who shared Adaobi’s photograph on X and revealed that the young medical student had succumbed to her injuries after days of intensive treatment.
Bohuslavska also disclosed that Adaobi had been with her friend, 23-year-old Fatima Huseynova, during the attack. Fatima was killed instantly, while Adaobi fought for her life until her death in Germany.
Paying tribute to its late student, Kharkiv National Medical University described Adaobi as a brilliant and dedicated scholar whose commitment to excellence was evident throughout her academic journey.
According to the university, she enrolled in the institution in 2020 and consistently distinguished herself through outstanding academic performance.
Beyond the classroom, she expanded her medical training through international internships, including programmes at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom in 2024 and Biruni University in Türkiye in 2025.
The institution said Adaobi was admired for her compassion, diligence and passion for helping others, adding that she left behind lasting memories among lecturers, classmates and friends who knew her as a warm and selfless individual.
The university extended its heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones, saying her death was a painful loss to the university community and to everyone whose lives she touched.

As of the time this report was filed, we have not independently confirmed Adaobi’s nationality.
