Newlywed Couple Kidnapped With Others on Kwara-Kogi Border
A newlywed couple and four other people have been kidnapped along the Eruku-Iyemero Road on the border between Kwara and Kogi states.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening as the group was returning from an engagement ceremony in Eruku, Kwara State.
Sources said the vehicle was initially expected to take the Isanlu Road. However, the driver reportedly used an alternative route to drop off the best man and other members of the group at Iyamoye in Kogi State.
It was along the route that the travellers were reportedly intercepted and taken away.
Details about the identity of the other victims and their current whereabouts remained unclear as of Sunday, while security agencies continued efforts to secure their release.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the abduction and said soldiers had begun combing the surrounding bush in search of the victims and their abductors.
Ojo said the vehicle conveying the group was later found abandoned at a former police station in Ayetoro, Ekiti State.
He explained that police personnel from Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states were working together on the rescue operation because the incident occurred within a border area involving the three states.
Security personnel were searching the surrounding communities and bush paths for clues that could lead to the victims and their abductors.
Authorities had yet to disclose whether the kidnappers had contacted the families of the victims or demanded a ransom.
The rescue operation was ongoing as security agencies continued efforts to locate the kidnapped couple and the other victims.
