I’ll Pay Your Dowry And Marry You — Yobe APC Chairman
Yobe State APC Chairman, Muhammad Gadaka, has sparked controversy after offering to pay the dowry of women who leave husbands opposed to their support for the party.
Gadaka made the remark on Thursday at an APC campaign rally in Nangere, Yobe State, while urging women to support the party.
He urged women to resist attempts by their husbands to prevent them from voting for the APC during elections.
“If your husband won’t allow you to vote for APC, stand up to him and seek a divorce.
“If you leave the marriage, I will pay your dowry and marry you,” Gadaka said.
His remark attracted criticism from residents and Islamic scholars, who described it as provocative and capable of undermining family values.
Following the backlash, Gadaka apologised and withdrew the controversial statement.
In a video shared Friday, Yobe Commissioner for Information, Abdullahi Bego, said Gadaka claimed his words were misunderstood.
Gadaka explained that the statement was made as a joke and was not intended to encourage married women to divorce.
“My statement was just a joke and does not in any way represent the ideals I stand for,” he said.
He added, “I offer apologies for my statement, and I hereby withdraw it.”
The controversy comes days after Borno Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, faced criticism over a reported threat.
Buba had reportedly threatened to flog people who refused to support the APC in the 2027 election.
