Flash Flood Disaster Leaves 95 Dead, Hundreds Missing at Nepal-Tibet Border
At least 95 people have been confirmed dead after a devastating flash flood and mudslide swept through the Nepal-Tibet border area.
Hundreds of people are still missing following the disaster, including tourists and pilgrims who were visiting the region.
Nepal’s tourist authorities said more than 100 Indian nationals, 47 Americans and 33 Britons are among those unaccounted for.
The border region attracts large numbers of trekkers and pilgrims, leaving many foreign visitors in the area when the disaster occurred.
Nepal’s foreign minister said an earthquake may have triggered an avalanche that caused the deadly flooding. However, authorities have yet to establish the exact cause.
Videos from the affected areas show the extent of the destruction. CCTV footage from Tibet captured a huge surge of water and mud crashing through buildings at a border crossing.
Footage from the Nepalese side also showed residents fleeing as floodwaters rapidly swept through the area.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate survivors and determine the full scale of the disaster.
