Flamingos Fall 2-1 to Poland in U-17 Women’s World Cup Opener as Umejiaku Scores
Nigeria’s Flamingos began their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B match on Saturday in Morocco. Wiktoria Skrzypczak gave Poland the lead from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute, leaving Nigeria trailing 1-0 at half-time.

Poland doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through Natalia Skrok, putting the Nigerian youngsters under pressure. The Flamingos fought back, with Oluebube Umejiaku pulling one goal back in the 79th minute, but Nigeria could not find an equaliser before the final whistle.

The defeat leaves the Flamingos needing a strong response in their remaining group matches to keep their hopes of progressing alive. Nigeria will face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, before taking on defending champions Korea DPR on Friday, October 23.
