Owerri Airport Runway to Close for 25 Days From October 20
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will temporarily close Runway 17/35 at Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, for 25 days beginning October 20, 2026, to allow comprehensive repairs and resurfacing.
FAAN said the closure became necessary because of potholes, surface cracks and extensive pavement deterioration worsened by months of heavy rainfall. The planned work will include repairs to damaged sections, treatment of cracks, resurfacing and other measures aimed at improving the runway’s safety and serviceability ahead of the Christmas travel period.
FAAN advised airlines and other airport operators to make contingency arrangements for flights during the closure. Runways at airports in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano are also scheduled for rehabilitation, although dates for their closures have not yet been confirmed.
