Helicopter Crashes in Ondo Community, Several Feared Dead

A helicopter has reportedly crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with several people feared dead.

The aircraft reportedly came down in a swampy area opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda on Monday, triggering concern among residents of the coastal community.

Emergency responders and security personnel were said to have moved to the crash site as efforts began to establish what happened and determine the extent of casualties.

Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed the helicopter crash during a telephone conversation with journalists.

Oripelaye said military equipment had been recovered from the scene, but authorities could not immediately establish the number of people who were aboard the aircraft.

He reportedly said the helicopter had been burnt to rubble, making it difficult to immediately determine further details about the occupants and possible survivors.

The Ondo State Police Command also confirmed the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, said investigations were ongoing as authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid circulating information that had not been officially verified.

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the helicopter had not been officially confirmed by the authorities.

The number of people on board, their identities and the fate of possible survivors also remained unknown as rescue and assessment efforts continued.
