TODAY IN HISTORY – 5th Oct, 2026 – ORBITS NEWS
By Valentine Uchechukwu Ndukwu.
“History will be kind to me for I intend to write it” says Winston Churchill with clarity of wit and confidence.

But our interest on Today in History, regarding this quote is about how he took it upon himself as a historian and statesman to shape the narrative of his time and ensure his legacy. That could be you also.

Most lamentably, on October 5, 1967, during the early months of the Nigerian Civil War, federal troops of the 2nd Division entered the strategic town of Asaba on the west bank of the Niger River. Very sadly too, in 2012 on this day, four young students from the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT)—Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku, Chiadika Biringa, and Tekena Elkanah, were brutally murdered by a mob in the Aluu community of Rivers State. The students had traveled to the area to peacefully collect a debt when a false alarm was raised, wrongly accusing them of theft. The resulting horrific act of vigilante justice was captured on film and shared globally, sparking nationwide outrage and fundamentally altering the conversation surrounding “jungle justice” and legal reforms in Nigeria.

For the records, today is International Day of No Prostitution.
