7 MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS FROM PRESIDENT TINUBU’S INDEPENDENCE SPEECH

President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria has officially completed its phase of painful economic stabilization and entered a new era of shared prosperity for all citizens.

The President stated this during his 66th Independence Anniversary broadcast to the nation.

Tinubu said the difficult structural decisions of the past three years have repaired the country’s economic foundation emphasizing the central purpose of his administration has now shifted from emergency economic recovery to directly lowering the cost of living and driving nationwide industrial production.

The President pointed to key growth indicators including an economic growth rate exceeding 4 percent and non-oil export revenues reaching over 6 billion dollars as concrete proof that the national economy has turned the corner.

He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast and resist calls to return to unsustainable subsidy regimes, assuring citizens that the foundation is now secure to build a prosperous and self-reliant nation.

The 7 Key Takeaways Explained

1. Transition to the “Age of Prosperity”: The administration has declared an end to the emergency economic stabilization phase. The primary goal now moves from macroeconomic recovery to making food, energy, housing, and transportation affordable for everyday households.

2. Surge in Non-Oil Revenue and FX Stability: Nigeria’s economic outlook shows steady progress, with GDP growth surpassing 4 percent. Foreign reserves have been rebuilt, inflation is steadily declining, and non-oil exports generated a record high of over 6 billion dollars in 2025.

3. Targeted Campaign to Lower Living Costs: The government is tackling inflation at the root by funding mechanized irrigation, dry-season farming, and improved access to seeds and fertilizers, while building transport corridors to connect rural farms directly to urban markets.

4. Industrialization Powered by Gas and Tech: To absorb millions of young job seekers, national policy is placing enterprise at its core using domestic gas to power factories, reviving old industrial hubs, and expanding digital connectivity to help young entrepreneurs build high-tech unicorns.

5. Expansion of Social Safety Nets: To cushion immediate economic hardships, the administration is scaling up direct support via an overhauled National Social Register, offering tuition-free higher education access through NELFUND, and providing consumer credit for essential assets via CREDICORP.

6. Rejection of Regressive Subsidy Demands: President Tinubu firmly rejected calls to reinstate fuel and currency subsidies, comparing previous subsidy models to “morphine” that concealed systemic decay while draining national resources.

7. National Unity and Looking Ahead: Summarizing the nation’s journey as having “passed through its own Red Sea,” the President called for unified faith in Nigeria’s future, stressing that the sacrifices made will now translate into tangible economic opportunities across all six geopolitical zones.
