Tanzanian President Samia Hassan Loses Husband in Zanzibar

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has lost her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on Monday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.

The death was announced by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who expressed condolences to the president and the family.

Hafidh, who had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition, died in a hospital in Zanzibar, the family’s region of origin.

He became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed office as president following the death of former President John Magufuli.

The vice president said arrangements were underway for Hafidh’s burial in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous archipelago that forms part of Tanzania.

President Samia is currently serving her second term after winning the 2025 presidential election with more than 97 per cent of the vote.

The couple had four children — three sons and a daughter, who is a member of Tanzania’s Parliament.

Kenyan President William Ruto joined other leaders in mourning Hafidh, extending condolences to the Tanzanian president, her children and the people of Tanzania.

“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania an eminent son,” Ruto said.

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye also conveyed his condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania over the loss.
