Ghana Launches App To Uncover Hidden Marriages

Ghana has launched a new application that allows prospective couples to check whether their partners are already married before walking down the aisle.

Known as Marrify, the application was introduced by Ghana’s Ministry of Gender to promote transparency and informed decision-making among people preparing for marriage.

The app was unveiled at a ceremony attended by Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Ghana’s Minister of Gender.

Marrify was developed in partnership with MarryRight, an agency specialising in family law and marriage-related matters.

Speaking at the event, Lartey said the application would help people make more informed choices before entering marriage.

She said knowing a partner’s marital status could help couples approach marriage with greater awareness, honesty and responsibility.

According to the minister, the initiative also seeks to encourage relationships founded on respect while supporting efforts to prevent gender-based violence.

The launch comes against the backdrop of cases where people discover only after marriage that their partners have existing spouses or undisclosed marital commitments.

Such discoveries can trigger emotional distress, family disputes and legal complications, particularly where one partner deliberately concealed an existing marriage.

The Ghanaian government hopes Marrify will provide prospective couples with an additional means of verifying crucial information before making a lifelong commitment.

Lartey urged couples to approach marriage with greater openness and responsibility, stressing the importance of making informed decisions before saying, ‘I do.’
