Behold a few historical events on this day that caught our fancy
On this day in 1875, the first official game of polo was played in Argentina after being introduced by British ranchers.
Still on this day in 1895, John Brallier became the first openly paid professional American football player, when he was paid US$10 by David Berry, to play for the Latrobe Athletic Association in a 12–0 win over the Jeanette Athletic Association.
Again on this day in 1950, “Nino” Farina became the first Formula One Drivers’ champion after winning the 1950 Italian Grand Prix.
Today in history says in 1981, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, an international bill of rights for women, is instituted by the United Nations.
In 1987 on this day, in a coup d’état in Burundi, President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza was deposed by Major Pierre Buyoya.
On this day in 2025, two 10-year-old girls from Port Harcourt made history. Akachukwu Blessed Nwachukwu and Ifunanya Gabriella Okoye won the Technovation Global Summit beginner division. They proved the brilliant potential of young Nigerian tech innovators on the world stage.
Still on this day in 1970, iconic American football coach Vince Lombardi passed away at the age of 57. He was best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, he led the team to victories in the first two Super Bowls in NFL history. His name became so synonymous with excellence and single-minded determination that the NFL named its ultimate championship prize—the Vince Lombardi Trophy—in his honour.
According to Today in history, Tanitoluwa Emmanuel “Tani” Adewumi’s birthday is today. He was born on September 3, 2010. And for the records, he is a Nigerian-American chess player who currently holds the title of International Master (IM). A chess prodigy , he won the 2019 K-3 New York State chess championship at the age of 8 after having played the game for only a year while living with his refugee family in a homeless shelter in Manhattan.
