US Urges Global Partners to Cut ‘Business as Usual’ With Nicaragua
The United States has urged international partners to stop treating Nicaragua’s government as business as usual
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused President Daniel Ortega and Co-President Rosario Murillo of weakening democracy and tightening their grip on power.
His comments followed Nicaragua’s National Assembly’s approval of constitutional reforms that would extend the terms of Ortega, Murillo and other elected officials from six to seven years.
The reforms would also restrict certain political candidates and give the Supreme Electoral Council more authority over political parties and candidates.
Rubio said the Trump administration would push for measures against Nicaragua at the next OAS Foreign Ministerial meeting.
Nicaragua’s government, however, says the reforms are aimed at protecting the country’s sovereignty, security, stability and peace.
The constitutional changes still require approval in a second legislative session, expected in January 2027.
