King at 3, Uganda’s Oyo Dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, has died at the age of 34.

Oyo’s death was announced by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described his passing as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people.

The cause of death was not immediately made public.

Ugandan media reports, however, quoted a government minister as saying the monarch had been seriously ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States.

Oyo’s remarkable journey to the throne began in 1995, when he inherited the crown following the death of his father. He was only three years old.

Because of his age, a regency was established to administer the kingdom until he was old enough to assume full royal responsibilities.

In 2010, at 18, Oyo was formally crowned, marking the beginning of his reign as an adult monarch.

His early accession attracted international attention, with Guinness World Records recognising him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

Although Uganda operates as a republic under an elected president, its traditional kingdoms continue to play significant cultural and historical roles.

The Tooro Kingdom is among the country’s major traditional institutions and is believed to have a population of more than two million people.

Its throne is hereditary, with succession determined by the royal family.

As king, Oyo became known beyond the palace for his involvement in programmes promoting youth development, education, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness.

He also grew into an influential cultural figure and remained a respected symbol of the Tooro people.

Reacting to his death, Prime Minister Akiiki urged the people of Tooro to remain calm, united and prayerful as the kingdom begins its mourning period.

“The continuity of the Crown is assured,” Akiiki said, revealing that Oyo had left behind a prince who would eventually inherit the throne.

The kingdom is expected to formally announce the identity of the heir in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions.

Oyo was not officially married, meaning the succession will proceed through the established hereditary royal line.

The Buganda Kingdom, Uganda’s largest traditional institution, also mourned the monarch and extended its condolences to the Tooro royal family and people.

Oyo’s death brings to an end a nearly three-decade reign that began when he was a three-year-old child and ended with him as one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.
