Kamloops Resident Calls for E-Scooter Pilot to End After Fatal Crash
A Kamloops resident has launched a petition urging the city to withdraw from British Columbia’s four-year e-scooter pilot program following the death of his 18-year-old friend. Luke Grigg says the continued use of electric scooters raises public safety concerns and is calling on city council to end shared e-scooter rentals in the community.
The teenager was found critically injured near Battle Street and Lee Road shortly before 4 a.m. on August 16 and later died in hospital, according to Kamloops RCMP. Police said no other vehicles were involved and seized the scooter, while investigators believe the rider was not wearing a helmet. Grigg’s mother said the victim may have lost control after encountering a rough section of road.
The petition is also calling for a provincial review of e-scooter-related injuries and deaths. The B.C. Coroners Service says it has investigated nine e-scooter-related deaths since 2021, including the latest case. Grigg’s campaign has received mixed reactions, with some residents supporting a ban while others are calling for stronger safety measures and better regulation.
