“UR KILLING DEMOCRACY”: Davido Confronts Tinubu as Osun Election Takes Twist
Afrobeats superstar Davido has confronted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over developments surrounding the Osun State governorship election, accusing the president of undermining democracy.
Davido made the statement on Saturday, August 15, as voting and result collation continued across the state.
The singer, whose uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking re-election, alleged that security personnel were being withdrawn from Osun amid reports that his side was leading in the election.
“Because we are winning. They want to withdraw the police and military! MR PRESIDENT TINUBU! UR KILLING DEMOCRACY,” Davido wrote on his verified X account.
The singer had remained active throughout the election, urging voters and supporters to stay at their polling units until results were uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, IReV.
He also called on voters to protect their ballots and raised concerns over other incidents reported during the exercise, including the alleged arrest of an opposition party chairman.
The election witnessed a heavy security presence across Osun, with thousands of police officers deployed alongside other security agencies.
Mobile units, helicopters and drones were also deployed, while the military was involved in securing strategic areas and enforcing movement restrictions.
Authorities had said the security measures were intended to protect voters, electoral officials and election materials and ensure a peaceful election.
Davido’s accusation quickly sparked heated reactions online. While some Nigerians backed his intervention and called for the protection of the electoral process, others questioned whether his strong stance was driven largely by the fact that his uncle is contesting the election.
As attention shifts to the collation and declaration of results, Davido’s remarks have added another layer of tension to an already closely watched Osun governorship election.
