Super Falcons Miss 2027 World Cup as Nigerians Demand Overhaul
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been knocked out of the race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in an intercontinental play-off match in Morocco on Thursday.
The defeat means Nigeria will miss next year’s tournament in Brazil, while South Africa move on to the next stage of the qualification process.
Banyana Banyana took an early advantage through Thembi Kgatlana before Refiloe Jane extended their lead to 2-0.
Christy Ucheibe gave Nigeria a lifeline after converting a penalty, but the Falcons could not find the equaliser as South Africa held on for the win.
The result has sparked widespread criticism among Nigerian football supporters, with several calling for a major overhaul of the team and changes to the technical crew.
Some supporters questioned how the Falcons, who have long been regarded as the dominant force in African women’s football, could suffer such a sharp decline within a short period.
“How did the Super Falcons become so bad in the space of a year?” @Retr0Zavage asked.
@Amac1306 called for a “total overhaul” and urged the recruitment of a new coach and technical crew capable of identifying fresh talent for the national team.
Coach Justin Madugu also came under fire, with supporters accusing him of poor tactics and questionable team selection.
@olubunmi4ever criticised the decision to start Ordega, saying: “No tactics, no pattern, no strategy. Just looking for runners like a headless chicken.”
Another supporter, @SisoChukwuemeka, described the result as a painful decline for the Super Falcons and called for Madugu to be removed, while also urging older players to make way for younger talent.
@sholamcintosh described the outing as “one of the worst times in Nigerian football history” and argued that about half of the squad should not return to the national team.
The reactions reflect the growing frustration among supporters following Nigeria’s disappointing campaign.
With the World Cup now out of reach, attention is expected to shift to the Nigeria Football Federation and whether it will make changes to the coaching staff and squad ahead of the Falcons’ next international assignments.
