Jon Jones Advises Khamzat Chimaev on Bouncing Back After First UFC Defeat
Former UFC two-division champion Jon Jones has offered advice to Khamzat Chimaev following the first loss of the middleweight star’s professional career.
Chimaev suffered a narrow split-decision defeat to Sean Strickland in his first UFC middleweight title defense after fading in the later rounds. The setback ended his unbeaten run and sparked calls for an immediate rematch.
Speaking with Red Corner MMA, Jones said Chimaev has all the tools to reclaim the title but must focus on improving the areas exposed in defeat.
According to Jones, Chimaev should work on his endurance, become more comfortable fighting off his back, and strengthen his ground game to avoid similar problems in future bouts.
The UFC legend also stressed the importance of mental resilience, saying a fighter’s confidence can be shaken after a first loss but that setbacks often help athletes return stronger.
“Khamzat is a great striker and wrestler, but I’d go back to the drawing board, improve the weak areas, and focus on the mindset,” Jones said. “Losses happen. Sometimes the best version of a fighter comes after a defeat.”

Chimaev has continued to campaign for a rematch with Strickland, although no official date has been announced for his next fight. He remains determined to regain the UFC middleweight championship before the end of the year.
