Cameroon Boat Disaster Claims 20 Lives, Including 18 Nigerians
At least 20 people have died after a boat travelling from Cameroon towards Nigeria capsized during a violent storm, with 18 Nigerians among those confirmed dead.
The vessel was reportedly sailing from Garoua in Cameroon to Dasin, a community in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, when it overturned late Monday night.
According to eyewitnesses, more than 50 passengers were on board the boat, which was also carrying iron rods and other building materials intended for the Nigerian community.
The vessel reportedly encountered a powerful storm around midnight, causing it to capsize and throwing passengers into the water.
Early reports suggested that the death toll could be as high as 30. However, local authorities have so far confirmed the deaths of about 20 people.
Sources said 18 of the victims identified as Nigerians have been buried in Wuro Bokki community in Fufore Local Government Area.
Search and rescue operations are still underway for passengers who remain unaccounted for.
Divers from Cameroon and Nigeria are reportedly taking part in the operation, while survivors rescued from the accident are receiving treatment at hospitals in communities around the border.
The full number of passengers who survived or remain missing is yet to be officially established as rescue teams continue their search.
