FIFA Introduces Major VAR Change Ahead of England vs Argentina World Cup Semi-Final
FIFA has introduced a significant change to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals following criticism over several controversial decisions during the tournament. The adjustment will take effect for England’s clash with Argentina in Atlanta and the remaining matches.

Instead of operating solely from the International Broadcast Centre in Dallas, VAR officials will now also be stationed at the match venue as a backup in case of communication or technical problems. FIFA said the move is intended to improve the efficiency and reliability of the review process during the tournament’s biggest games.

The decision follows growing complaints from teams and fans over contentious VAR calls, including incidents involving England and Egypt earlier in the competition.

While the technology and decision-making process remain unchanged, FIFA hopes the added on-site support will ensure smoother officiating in the closing stages of the World Cup.
