Spain’s Victory Lifts Yamal’s Ballon d’Or Bid as Mbappé’s Hopes Fade
Spain’s 2-0 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup semi-final has reshaped the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with Lamine Yamal strengthening his claim for football’s most prestigious individual award while Kylian Mbappé’s chances suffered a significant setback.

Yamal delivered another influential performance as Spain secured a place in the World Cup final for only the second time in the country’s history.
The teenage forward played a key role in the opening goal after winning the penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted in the 22nd minute.
Spain tightened their grip on the contest in the second half when Pedro Porro finished a well-worked move to double the lead and effectively end France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final.

Mbappé, who entered the match as one of the favourites for the Ballon d’Or, was unable to inspire a comeback despite another energetic display.
France’s elimination is expected to weaken his chances in the race for the award, although the Real Madrid forward remains in contention for the tournament’s Golden Boot with eight goals.

Yamal, on the other hand, has continued to impress throughout the World Cup and now has the opportunity to further strengthen his Ballon d’Or credentials if he leads Spain to the title.

Spain will face either England or Argentina in the World Cup final, where Yamal will be aiming to crown an outstanding tournament with another match-winning performance and bolster his case for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
