Ramaphosa Pays Tribute to Late Former Qatari Ruler Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to former Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy reached far beyond the Middle East.
Sheikh Hamad died on Sunday at the age of 74. He ruled Qatar from 1995 until stepping down in 2013, handing over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.
In a statement, the South African Presidency described the late leader as a close friend and valued partner of South Africa. It said his leadership played a key role in advancing Qatar’s peace, development and growing influence on the global stage.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said South Africa joins the people of Qatar and the international community in mourning the loss of a distinguished statesman.

He praised Sheikh Hamad’s vision, wisdom and commitment to the socio-economic development and prosperity of Qatar and the Global South, saying his contributions will leave a lasting legacy.
